I'm sure we've all noticed the abominations created by corporations online - the Web Design Hall of Shame. I personally do not view them as web sites accessible on the Internet. Rather, I view them as a sort of sub-network, nested within the Internet, that is a commerical hellscape. Such bland, boring sites do not belong on the Internet, they belong on the corporate web.
I'm here to celebrate the weird web sites out there. I may not like every site layout in existence, I may not like every colour combination, but I still feel that personal web sites should be celebrated.
I think font smoothing - or a lack thereof - is wonderful. That subtle lack of anti-aliasing is so nice. I think having pointless pages that serve no purpose other than being dumping grounds for you to put whatever you want is really cool. I love user-generated content. I love seeing what people do with the tools they're given, and I love how they then proceed to put it online for everyone to see. I love seeing creativity within communities, I love seeing people bend HTML and CSS in ways that continue to amaze me.
Simple web sites are wonderful just as ridiculously content-filled web sites. Simple colour palettes are nice. Broad, complex use of colour is always welcome, too.
Self-expression is an important aspect. I love seeing how people choose to express themselves online. To see people have complete control over their sites, and seeing what they choose to do with them, that fills me with excitement and wonder.
I believe that the personal web is sacred, and we should do our best to keep it alive for as long as we possibly can.
